The declawing procedure is an amputation
Declawing is much more than a simple nail trim. It is a serious operation that removes not only the claw, but the entire tip of a cat's "finger." In the vast majority of cases, it is not done for any health benefit to the cat, but instead for convenience to the owner.
Major surgery for convenience? Just try and imagine it; instead of trimming your own nails a bit shorter once per week and filing them down nice and smooth so they don't catch on things, someone suggested you lop off the tips of your fingers from the last knuckle onward, just to avoid trimming and catching on things in the future. It makes no sense for people and it makes no sense for cats. For cats who exhibit problem scratching behaviors, humane and non-surgical alternatives are readily available:
Scratching is a natural, instinctual, and healthy behavior for cats that owners should seek to channel appropriately and with positive reinforcement. Please speak out against this harmful and unnecessary procedure and pledge to never declaw any cat in your care. |
