Mission Statement
Alley Cat Rescue’s (ACR) commitment is to help stray and outdoor community cats in the United States and around the world by promoting humane, nonlethal care to improve cats’ lives. ACR works to reduce the number of feral cats living in colonies through a proven method called Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

ACR promotes compassion and humane care for cats through effective campaigns:
  • Our Cat Action Teams assist groups and individuals to help domestic and feral cats
  • We assist the public with cat behavioral problems
  • We promote a better understanding of feline diseases
  • Our programs keep cats out of the shelter system, thus reducing euthanasia
  • We promote neuter-before-adoption and early-age spay/neuter
  • We promote TNR programs for feral cats
ACR operates a multitude of programs to help cats:
  • Weekly low-cost spay/neuter clinic
  • Working cats program
  • Advocacy campaigns
  • Global Feral Fix Challenge

Vision Statement
ACR’s programs promote better care for community cats through trap-neuter-return. Local programs include placing unwanted cats in new homes, running a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, and providing support for local feral cat caretakers. Nationally we operate a network of Cat Action Teams across the U.S. Our May Spay Challenge has developed a national network of veterinarians offering free or low-cost TNR services. ACR's mission is to lead the way for humane care for all cats.

ACR introduces ethical standards for all cats
Alley Cat Rescue is leading the way in promoting humane and compassionate care for ALL cats. It is important to remove feral cats from “pest” status that many put them in and instead promote an ethical, nonlethal way to deal with the population of outdoor community cats. Decades of catch-and-kill has not worked.

ACR’s History
ACR was founded in 1997 by Louise Holton, who was one of a few pioneers who brought TNR to national attention in 1990. Holton introduced the following programs to help cats:
  • Attacking cat overpopulation at the source by sterilizing feral cats, thus preventing the births of hundreds of homeless kittens.
  • Providing information on how to rescue feral kittens, tame them and help them to become loving companions.
  • Providing information and guidelines on all aspects of feral cat care and control.
  • Publishing the book, Alley Cat Rescue’s Guide to Managing Community Cats.
